The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (CANADA)
The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) is the only feminist peace organization in Canada, founded in 1960. Vow seeks to “To provide a means for women to exercise responsibility for the promotion of world peace and justice, through education of themselves and others to take an equal part in the democratic process of decision making; and to cooperate with women throughout the world to create the mutual respect and understanding necessary for the peaceful resolution of international conflict.” Their delegations to the United Nations, and peace camps empower young women to become a new generation of peacemakers.
Thai Freedom House (CHIANG MAI)
Thai Freedom House is a resource centre for refugees and minority groups in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The organization’s mission is to “provide opportunities for displaced peoples that have slipped through the cracks of society... They are Refugees from war torn countries, indigenous and minority people who have been denied basic human rights…” Through their language, leadership, higher education, and cultural preservation initiatives (and many more!) they empower their students with essential life skills, and help them to become leaders. “The young adults in Thai Freedom House’s Language and Arts, Language Project that have shown themselves to be leaders in the community. The students that strive towards higher education and have plans to be the change makers in the new Burma, whether they wish to be involved in politics, education, health care, civil society or business
Gloryland Prep School
Gloryland Prep School is a self-sufficient, locally-managed primary school in Arusha Tanzania, with a population of 250 students. Currently, 50% of students in the country fail their entrance exams, and do not further pursue education. Gloryland aspires to help their student population continue their education through secondary school, by equipping them with the skills they need to take their entrance exams.
Jullard creations (CAPE TOWN)
Jullard creations empowers the youth of Khayelitsha, an impoverished township in Cape Town, with access to after-school programs in the arts (Music, dance, visual arts), growing their own food, and entrepreneurship.
The Backpack (CAPE TOWN)
The Backpack, a fair-trade hostel in Cape Town, South Africa, is uplifting the local community with their socially responsible business. Their community initiatives focus on empowering the youth, and gives them access to opportunity and education through their soccer, jump-rope, and bursary programs. “By understanding, addressing and helping the social needs of the economically and socially disadvantaged communities of South Africa, we are able to work towards a just society in which all people get to share in the wealth of the country.”
